Q&A

What is Moissanite?

Moissanite is a alternative to natural grown diamonds; it’s a rare, precious gemstone with a much lower carbon footprint than traditional mined diamonds.

Nearly all Moissanite diamonds nowadays are lab grown. However, it was actually first discovered in a meteorite crater in Arizona, United States by acclaimed Nobel prize winner doctor Henri Moissan in 1893. 100 years later when scientists were able to successfully recreate a Moissanite lab growing process. Shortly after that, Charles and Colvard produced the first commercial quality lab grown moissanite gemstones. It can take up to three months to meticulously create a single moissanite gemstone.

Moissanite Vs Diamond

  1. Moissanite is a synthetic form of silicon carbide, while diamond is a natural form of carbon.
  2. Moissanite is cheaper than diamond, especially for larger carat sizes.
  3. Moissanite is slightly less hard than diamond, but still very durable. It has a hardness of 9.25 on the Mohs scale, while diamond has a hardness of 10.
  4. Moissanite has more fire than diamond, which means it shows more colored flashes of light. Diamond has more brilliance, which means it shows more white flashes of light. However, this depends on the cut and quality of the stones, and some people may prefer one over the other.
